New rival to Cosatu completes registration

Expelled South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) president Thobile Ntola was confident yesterday his newly-formed union would make a difference to workers.

The newly formed South African Public Service Union (Sapsu) is to rival the Congress of the South African Trade Union (Cosatu).

Ntola, who is the interim president of Sapsu, was speaking to the Daily Dispatch following an announcement last Friday that the union had finally been issued with a certificate of registration by the Department of Labour.

The certificate allows the union to have access to stop order facilities for their members.

Ntola said Cosatu affiliates were going to bleed membership and claimed there were workers who wanted to associate themselves with the new structure.

“We don’t have ambitions to go to the state ,” Ntola said.

The union planned to launch structures across provinces.

In the Eastern Cape, an interim structure has already been formed.

These included former Sadtu provincial leaders, who locked horns with their national office after they voiced support for Ntola and Zwelinzima Vavi.

It resulted in them being replaced by an administrator and task team.

The provincial interim structure included Mbuyiselo Mayase (chairman); Buyiselo Mabope (deputy chairman); Mncekeleli Ndongeni (secretary); Vuyo Jiza (deputy secretary); Tingazwa Mhlaba (treasurer); Zeporah Poti (gender portfolio); Faniswa Gege (sports and culture); Siyabulela Jonas (health); and Sondisa Magqazolo (education).

Ndongeni, former Sadtu provincial secretary, said processes were under way to formulate local structures leading to an inaugural provincial conference.

Ndongeni said branches which were ready for a launch would have to contact the interim provincial leadership.
