Police officer shoots teacher‚ then kills himself

An-off duty police officer based in Mthatha shot and killed himself after an altercation with a female school teacher in Qumbu this afternoon.

Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci  confirmed the incident, saying the 58-year-old warrant officer, who was attached to Mthatha public order police unit, shot and injured the 45-year-old woman.

“This happened following an altercation in the school premises in Qumbu at about 12pm. It is suspected that thereafter the officer then shot himself and died on the scene,” said Soci.

The teacher was rushed to a hospital in Mthatha.

“The motive for the shooting is not known at this stage and will form part of the investigation. Murder and inquest dockets have been opened and are under investigation by Qumbu SAPS,” said Soci.

Eastern Cape education spokesman Mali Mtima said the department was dealing with the case.

“A report is being prepared by the department and we can confirm that we are working with the police as well. Also, counselling has been arranged for the staff at the school,”  said Mtima. It was not clear if the deceased and the teacher were related or not.
