The Mtyanti Msauli ANC branch in Mdantsane has emerged as the most influential and powerful in the Buffalo City region following the weekend’s elective conference.

The branch, which covers Mdantsane’s NU 14 and 16, fielded Xola Pakati, Ncedo Kumbaca and Sinethemba Mashalaba for senior positions.

BCM’s deputy mayor Pakati emerged as the new regional chairman while Kumbaca was elected as new regional treasurer.

Mashalaba was elected into the 20-member additional regional executive committee team at the conference, held at the Alexander Golf Club.

Mashalaba is one of the most popular members in the youth league and ANC, and previously made way for members from other branches to form part of the executive.

He did the same when the ANCYL held its provincial and regional conference late last year, but his allies vowed not to compromise him this time around.

Branch secretary Nkululeko Vellem said the gain to the ANC was a loss to Mtyanti Msauli branch members.

“These three comrades were very central in the building of our branch and now that we have to give over to a senior structure such as the REC, it will be very hard to fill these huge gaps.”

Vellem described Pakati – a former Cosatu provincial secretary – as a father figure who was always willing to give guidance.

He said Pakati would tell “anyone” if he thought they were out of line.

“He played the role of a father in the branch, a very critical role in making our branch a stable ANC branch in the region,” said Vellem.

He credited Mashalaba with being a disciplined member “whom when we least expect it, will tell you to wait for your turn to be deployed”.

Kumbaca used to lead the branch’s youth league.

“It’s his energy in doing his political duties, which makes him stand out. It was an easy task for our branch to motivate for all three to be considered to serve in the REC.

“We are very honoured as Mtyanti Msauli for the support we received from other branches for these three leaders to be afforded the opportunity to serve and take BCM region to greater heights,” said Vellem.
