A disgruntled group of ANC members from the Buffalo City Metro region yesterday announced their plans to hold a separate regional elective conference on Saturday.

This is despite the fact that BCM deputy mayor Xola Pakati was elected regional chairman and Pumlani Mkolo regional secretary at an elective conference at the weekend.

The disgruntled members – led by Joe Jordaan, Ayanda Matiti and Thabo Mandila – have staged several protest marches to ANC offices in the past few months.

They had called on the party’s provincial executive committee (PEC) not to allow last weekend’s conference to convene.

The group first wanted investigations into allegations of membership rigging and gate-keeping within the metro made public.

However, the conference went ahead and the findings remained a secret.

Addressing a press conference at the Mdantsane Sun yesterday, Jordaan said ANC members from 48 of 50 ANC branches in the region had decided to convene their own conference at the same venue (Mdantsane Sun) this Saturday because they did not recognise the new regional executive committee (REC).

“They have removed a legitimate structure which was led by Comrade Zuki and replaced it by an illegitimate structure,” said Jordaan.

A five-member interim task team was announced which will be responsible for the plan of action going towards Saturday’s conference.

The members are Jordaan as the convener; Mike Mnikina as his deputy; Thabo Mandila as coordinator; and Tham-Tham Calata as deputy co-ordinator. Xolani Somaca has been elected the official spokesman.

Asked which offices the leaders would use once elected into office, Jordaan replied: “There is only one ANC regional office in BCM. It’s in Oxford Street. That is the one we will be using because it belongs to all ANC members,” he added.

The Dispatch reported yesterday that ANC provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle had announced that the ringleaders behind the recent protest action would be charged and summoned before the party’s provincial integrity committee.

Jordaan said they were happy with that.

“We will be afforded time to also show them who we are, and show them our political profiles,” he said.

But Jordaan asked that the committee also summon Masualle and those who had allegedly misused money meant for Nelson Mandela’s memorial services.

“Masualle also benefited from the Mandela memorial money because money was also deposited into his private account,” said Jordaan.

Mkolo, newly elected BCM regional deputy chairman Luleka Simon-Ndzele and REC additional member Sindiswa Gomba are all facing charges in court relating to the misuse of R5.9-million meant for memorial services around BCM.

Other politicians facing similar charges are former BCM mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and her former deputy Themba Thinta.

Masualle, Mkolo, Simon-Ndzele, Ncitha, Gomba and Thinta could not be reached for comment.
