Poweball ups chance to win

The chances of winning the jackpot have been doubled with the newly launched Powerball Plus game that will see an increase in jackpot prizes and winning divisions increased from eight to nine.

Ithuba Holdings, the official operator of the South African National Lottery, announced that the overall chances of winning was one in 34 but now players have an average one in 18 chance.

The new format was announced this month and unveiled at a launch in Sandton last week.

To celebrate the new PowerBall the operator announced a guaranteed R50-million jackpot for the December 1 draw and an additional R10-million guaranteed jackpot the same day to mark the unveiling of the PowerBall Plus.

As a result of the changes, the price of a PowerBall ticket will go up from R3.50 to R5 and the new PowerBall Plus will be priced at R2.50.

The price increase comes into effect on November 28 when the new game goes on sale.

Explaining the new format, PR manager at Ithuba Zukiswa Nomnganga said the layout of the betslips (tickets) will have an extra tick box to select to play PowerBall Plus, the font was more legible and a “Quick Pick” tick box had also been added.

In a media statement the operator’s CEO, Charmaine Mabuza, said Ithuba was confident South Africans would enjoy the change.

The draws takes place every Tuesday and Friday evening and are broadcast live on e.tv at 9pm.
