Beauties to vie for SA crown

Two Eastern Cape beauties have made the cut for next year’s Miss South Africa pageant.

Mthatha’s Luyolo Mngonyama, 24, and Mikaela Oosthuizen, 20, from Port Elizabeth, made it into the top 12, and will represent the province at the pageant in March next year.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, the two NMMU students spoke about how they had fulfilled life-long dreams by entering the pageant.

Oosthuizen is no stranger to competitions, or to winning pageants.

In 2010 she was crowned the youngest Miss South Africa Teen at 14 years and last year she made it into the top 30 of the Top Billing presenter search competition.

She said she was aiming to be the first person to win both Miss SA Teen and Miss South Africa.

“That is my main reason for entering the competition.

“I have been modelling since I was 12, so I just want to continue building on what I have been working on.

“I want to be proof that you are never too young to follow your dreams and I want to continue with projects that advance the importance of education,” said the second-year BA media communications and culture student.

Mngonyama, who is a third-year BA student majoring in psychology and sociology, said it was still hard for her believe that she made it into the finals.

“When you enter this pageant, you do it with the intention and hope to go all the way to snatching the crown.

“But when you see yourself get closer to your dreams, it’s still such an overwhelming and humbling feeling.

“I am excited to see what the future holds. I feel like it’s really within my grasp,” said Mngonyama, who cited Miss South Africa 2010, Bokang Montjane, as her inspiration.
