Pageant promises to be a thing of beauty

The second annual Miss Eastern Cape and Miss Eastern Cape Teen beauty pageant taking place this weekend promises to be a bigger show, with one of the judges being a former Miss South Africa.

Defined as “beauty with a purpose” by founder Zikhona Ngxata, the pageant was more focused on women empowerment than just celebrating beauty.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Ngxata said the contest aimed to do more than search for beauty queens across the province, but also for talented and ambitious young people.

“Back in the day they were the best tool for disciplining and grooming young women and as such young women aspired to be like the beauty queens and carried themselves in that way,” said Ngxata.

She said she established the pageant with the sole intention to restore the dignity and character of the girl child.

“Young women these days face so many difficulties and believe that boozing their lives away is the only thing left for them to do. It’s really heartbreaking.

“So through this pageant we want to curb that behaviour and mentality and take the girls away from the streets and help them unleash their potential.”

Ngxata said they try to accomplish their mission by hosting the 24 finalists for a week at an “empowerment camp” where they are given workshops on proper grooming habits, make-up tips and general etiquette as well as career guidance.

Judges include former Miss South Africa Ziphozakhe Zokufa, founder of PortiaM beauty products Portia Mngomezulu, Nosi Moyo, who runs Visions4Academy in Port Elizabeth, photographer Jean-Paul Veaudry and personal grooming specialist Nerina le Roux.

The pageant will be hosted by SABC2 music show Afro Cafe presenter Stoane Seate and will feature South African celebrity chef Siba Mntongana as a guest speaker, with a music performance by popular RnB singer Donald.

Prizes include a bursary for the first year of tertiary study.

lThe pageant will be held at the Venue@Hemingways on Sunday at 6pm. Tickets are R150 for general access and R250 for VIP, available through Computicket. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
