ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa has urged ANC members not to allow others to dictate who they should choose as their leaders.

Addressing a crowd of more than 5000 ANC volunteers during the launch of the OR Tambo regional elections programme at Rotary Stadium in Mthatha yesterday, Ramaphosa said ANC branch members had the power to choose which leaders they wanted.

“You should elect your own leaders because if other people do it for you by giving you a list, and saying ‘this is the slate – sign’, you will vote for these people…do not agree to that.

“When it comes to elections, you are the ones who will give us names. You should not be given names via the internet, or SMS; names should come from you. names should not be given to you via Whatsapp. You are the ones who should say ‘this is the leader we want’. You scrutinise that leader in full, asking if this person is worthy of being a leader,” he said.

Ordinary ANC members should stop listening to others harping on about this and that as they were the most powerful unit of the party, Ramaphosa added.

ANC regions across the country are conducting elections for ward candidates for next year’s elections. In some branches around OR Tambo there are tensions as feuding factions want their own candidates to emerge as leaders.

In the 2011 local government elections the process was marred with controversy after some councillors’ names were tacked on to the election list later although they were never elected by branches. This led to a long investigation done by a team led by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma which led to some councillors being told to resign.

“The NGC brought the power back to you. It has brought everything to you. As branch members you are the most powerful…Do not listen to other people who will say nywe nywe nywe wara wara wara ; do not listen to that. You are the most powerful. So you sit back, relax and talk about the policy of the ANC. Reclaim the ANC, so that it becomes your ANC. That will help us eliminate the disease of selling votes and money for votes – it will end. The ANC of Luthuli, Tambo and Mandela is not for sale.”

Earlier in the day Ramaphosa met business people and traditional leaders.

Provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said Ramaphosa made an undertaking that he would come back next year to discuss some of the challenges raised by traditional leaders.

Mabuyane said the party would work hard to ensure that the ANC got more votes in KSD come 2016.
