The second Miss Eastern Cape and Miss Eastern Cape Teen queens were crowned in East London on Sunday night.

Zimi Mabunzi, 20, from King William’s Town and Abulele Dlungele, 16, from Mthatha are the new reigning beauty queens of the province.

Zingcwele Songelwa is Miss Eastern Cape first princess and Aphiwe Mnqunyana the second princess.

In the teen competition, Sesona Gobe and Thimna Qakwane were placed as first and second princess, respectively.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Mabunzi said she still could not believe she had snatched the crown.

Mabunzi, a 2013 Kingsridge High School for Girls matriculant who was pursuing a philosophy, politics and economics degree at the University of Cape Town, said she was unable to continue her studies due to finances.

One of the prizes she walks away with is a full bursary, courtesy of the Billion Group.

“My prayers have been answered. It’s almost like they knew that I really needed this. My winning is really a testament of what God’s glory can do,” said Mabunzi, who said she wanted to inspire young women like herself to stretch themselves and use their talents to better not only themselves but their communities as well.

The beauties will enjoy being driven around in a VW for the duration of their reign, and have an undisclosed monthly stipend, shopping vouchers and beauty hampers among other prizes.

The pageant – dubbed Beauty with a Purpose – was held at the Venue@Hemingways on Sunday.

Entertainment included a performance by rising afro pop sensation Lilitha, whose song Marikana is currently on high rotation.

Judges included former Miss South Africa Ziphozakhe Zokufa, founder of PortiaM beauty products Portia Mngomezulu, Nosi Moyo, who runs Visions4Academy in Port Elizabeth, photographer Jean-Paul Veaudry and personal grooming specialist Nerina le Roux.

The pageant was hosted by SABC2 music show Afro Cafe presenter Stoane Seate and featured South African celebrity chef Siba Mntongana as a guest speaker.

Pageant founder Zikhona Ngxata said that both winners possessed the grace and maturity the judges were looking for. “I am very proud of all the girls,” said Ngxata.

Ngxata said the event would not have been successful without their partners the Billion Group, Eastern Cape Gabbling and Betting Board, Max Wezie Construction and sponsors Vodacom, Old Mutual, Anax Logistics, Tsogo Sun, Afika M, Allure, Kush, Wendy H, The Palace and Turning Heads.
