ANC praises Zuma for 'demonstrating leadership' after disastrous Cabinet reshuffle

The ANC has backed President Jacob Zuma after his about-turn on the appointment of David ‘Des’ van Rooyen as finance minister.

Zuma stunned the nation when he made the announcement a week ago.

On Sunday he reversed the decision and appointed Pravin Gordhan to the post following a collapse in the financial and equity markets.

The ANC held an extended national working committee meeting on Tuesday to discuss “matters relating to the appointment of the minister of finance by Comrade Jacob Zuma“. The meeting included provincial chairs‚ league chairs and national leaders.

Minister in the presidency‚ Jeff Radebe‚ said: “The ANC has heard the people of South Africa“.

He said he and treasurer Zweli Mkhize had met with several leaders from the banking sector including Absa’s Maria Ramos and Colin Coleman of Goldman Sachs.

The ANC’s Jessie Duarte said the party backed “the president’s willingness to change an earlier deployment“. This had demonstrated leadership“.

Duarte said the party backed Pravin Gordhan when he said that he would not reverse decisions taken. Decisions taken by Nene “remain in force“.

This suggests that there will be no reversal of Nene’s decision to oppose a restructuring of aircraft purchases proposed by SAA board chairperson‚ Dudu Myeni.
