Mom shot dead after argument

A mother of four was shot dead by a close relative at her Keti Location home in Dutywa on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred just days after the 16 days of activism to end violence against women and children campaign came to a close last week.

Ntombizanele Pamla, 65, was shot several times in her upper body barely 30 minutes after the relative arrived at the family home from Cape Town.

The suspect cannot be named until he has appeared in court.

The relative, a manager at beverage company in Cape Town, is believed to have been angry after Pamla requested his wife, who had arrived earlier, to attend a burial society meeting which she was supposed to go to.

Pamla’s daughter Zimaseka said her mother had high blood pressure and diabetes.

“My mom was not feeling well when she asked to attend the meeting to prepare meals, something all the women in the village take part in.

“Seemingly his wife was not happy and failed to express her feelings with my mother, but told her husband who was still in Cape Town at the time.”

Zimaseka said her mother received phone calls from the suspect, asking why his wife was ordered to attend the meeting.

“I asked her why she would tell someone in Cape Town about something happening here and what was she hoping to achieve because nobody was forcing her to go cook at the meeting,” said Zimaseka.

She said not long after the suspect arrived at the family home from Cape Town, he “barged into my mother’s room where an argument ensued before he drew his gun from his waist and killed her”.

Police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said they were shocked when notified of the shooting.

“The 39-year-old suspect was found with a licensed pistol which police recovered from him.”

Manatha said the motive for the murder was still unclear.

The man will appear in the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court today.
