Three die, 14 injured in Dordrecht road crash

Three people died and 14 others were injured after a minibus taxi collided with a Nissan bakkie on the R392 between Queenstown and Dordrecht on Thursday.

The accident took place near Qoqodala village at about 7pm.

Provincial department of transport spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said: “Three died, 10 were severely injured and four others slightly injured.”

He said it was not immediately clear what caused the accident but traffic officers and police were investigating.

“The high number of road deaths in the province is cause for concern not only to the department but to the entire province,” he said.

Kumbaca said speeding, fatigue, reckless and negligent driving, a disregard for road regulations and drunken driving were to blame for some of the accidents.

He said provincial traffic chiefs from all the districts met to strengthen the road safety strategy and review its effectiveness.

An additional 22 officers from the national transport department had been deployed to assist in the Eastern Cape.

Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana reminded road users that implementation of the 2015-16 Festive Season Road Safety Plan was in full swing with “zero tolerance” for traffic law transgressions.

“We will ensure visibility of traffic officers on all our roads, which will be supported by 10 roadside checkpoints on all the entrances into the province ... as well as other strategic areas like the coastal parts.”

These points will cover the N2, N6, R61, R72 and other strategic and hazardous routes.

“We call on all road users to comply with all the rules of the road and report any incident to our toll-free number 0800-644-644,” Tikana said. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
