Local rapper Gigi Lamayne takes the colloquial term schoolin’ to a new level after completing her undergraduate studies in media and anthropology with four distinctions.

Lamayne, real name Genesis Manney, aced subjects new media, consumer culture, anthropology of the state and the development of anthropological boards and will graduate from Wits University this year.

A self-proclaimed bookworm, she’s also been on the institution’s dean’s list every year since she began her studies in 2013

The list celebrates students who pass in the top 10% of each degree programme.

As an active participant in last year’s historic #FeesMustFall student movement, the Witsie, as Wits University students are popularly known, says she’s proud to have finished her degree.

“I finally finishing my degree as a form of my own emancipation as a student who struggled to get through university because of finances. Now, I can tell my story and represent my peers in a new setup in 2016 where I hope to solely focus on music,” she says.

“I’m no longer a passive artist. I can walk into a PR-related conversation, for instance, and have an opinion and give input and add to the ideas,” she says.

The award-winning rapper was last year signed to talent management agency Dream Team SA and has dubbed 2016 as The Year of Lamayne with a number of notable projects coming out this year.

Said the Ice Cream hit-maker, “People can look out for my mixtape called Ground Zero dropping sometime in this first months of the year.

“It targets varsity and high school students going into school for the first time and deals with some of the issues they face... there’s a song called Fees Will Fall that they should look out for”.

Her debut album, Genesis, is due to be released later this year.

“I’m so excited! I feel like I’m ready”.
