Court order allows Hawks to seize drugs, assets in EL

Some R105000 has been forfeited to the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) after drugs and a stash of cash were found at a man’s Parkside home last year.

The Grahamstown High Court granted the forfeiture order this week.

Elite crime fighting unit the Hawks searched Ralph Joseph’s house in Buffalo Flats and found mandrax tablets in his bedroom.

NPA spokesman Tshepo Ndwalaza said the Hawks stopped him trying to flush 910 mandrax tablets down the toilet.

“ totalling R105720 stashed in his wardrobe was seized and in July of the same year police found R34069 at his other house in Parkside.”

Josephs was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs.

This comes as the Grahamstown High Court also granted the AFU preservation orders against seized cash and other property belonging to two other men accused of dealing in drugs.

“Those with interest in the preserved items will be served with the orders and afforded an opportunity to oppose the application for their forfeiture to the state.

“Should they not oppose, the items will be forfeited to the state. These will then be sold and the proceeds used to bolster law enforcement,” said Ndwalaza.

Ndwalaza said in the other cases Nelson Dikeni of Graaff-Reinet was arrested after drugs were found in his white Nissan Hardbody last year.

The vehicle was seized by the state.

In November, Vuma Majola of Joza township in Grahamstown was arrested after police found mandrax and dagga in his house. A sum of R2260 was seized by police.

Ndwalaza said the preservation and forfeiture orders were part of the state’s civil forfeiture application procedure, in which seized tainted property may be forfeited to the state irrespective of whether its owner has been convicted of any offence.

Meanwhile, East London police arrested a man in Buffalo Flats after he was found with drugs and an unlicensed firearm.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Mtati Tana said the man would appear in court this week. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
