Police make 6 busts for drugs and stolen goods

Police made six different busts in the past week for drugs, stolen vehicles, cellphones and the pillaging of a Vodacom tower.

Two suspects in the theft of the Vodacom equipment were traced to Sunrise-on-Sea on Thursday.

A weekend joint operation between East London police and Buffalo City traffic officers resulted in the arrest of three suspects in Quigney. They were charged with dealing in drugs and possession of a stolen vehicle and cell phones.

East London police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana said the arrests had been made during police raids in the area. “Police visited liquor outlets to check compliance with Liquor Act and Safety Regulations.”

On Thursday, three men were arrested at lifestyle village Sunrise-on-Sea and Sunnyside suburb in East London, for allegedly robbing a Vodacom tower in the Bell area near Hamburg of items valued at R400000.

The men are accused of pillaging 43 tower batteries valued at R138000, 540 litres of diesel, four tyres and air conditioners.

They are due in the East London Magistrate’s Court today.

Three unlicensed hunting rifles and 40 bullets were found at the home of one of the suspects in Sunrise-on-Sea.

Tana called the case a “breakthrough” in the fight against crime.

Police, acting on a tip-off, first arrested the 59-year-old man in Sunnyside for possession of some of the stolen batteries, diesel, air conditioners and tyres.

Police also found three unlicensed rifles and ammunition rounds.
