The surprise find of a pair of prison trousers, shoes, a bag of civilian clothes and scuff marks on the boundary wall of the Absa stadium in East London yesterday is being investigated by authorities.

Eastern Cape correctional services regional commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast said they were not aware of any escaped prisoner in that area.

He said: “We do have an offender who escaped in King William’s Town. Maybe...”

Medic and dad Raymond Marzo said he snuck off from his child’s sports day event yesterday morning “for a smoke at the back near the loos”.

He was startled to come across the clothes, especially the bright yellow prison pants, with “DETAINEE – REMAND” emblazoned on the garment.

“There were scuff marks nearby going up a section of the wall which has no razor wire,” he said. “The yellow pants are lying on the ground, and there is a packet on top with other clothes, shoes, and a sheet from a hospital,” he said.

Breakfast said he would immediately look into the matter. — mikel@dispatch.co.za
