Intense dispute hearings over councillor nominations in the ANC’s DR WB Rubusana (DRWBR) region entered their second day, with ANC leaders and ward members locked in talks.
The hearings, led by ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) members Nolitha Ntobongwana, Pumelele Ndamase and Mzuyanda Sokujika, are dealing with disputes lodged by 17 wards.
The hearings started on Sunday morning, when disputes from five of the 17 wards were heard.
Wards with disputes were allowed to register on the day so that their cases could also be heard.
On Sunday, a group of 100 disgruntled members protested outside the DRWBR regional offices in Oxford Street in a bid to force the PEC delegation to deal with more disputes.
Tempers flared at 6pm on Sunday when only five wards were afforded time to state their cases and an agitated group outside the venue threatened to hold the PEC members hostage.
According to some of those who represented wards that lodged disputes, their wish was granted when the PEC members agreed to come back yesterday and deal with the remaining disputes.
By late yesterday it was not yet clear what had gone on.
The DRWBR regional structure, previously known as the Buffalo City Metro region, referred all queries concerning disputes to the party’s provincial office.
However, neither the ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane nor elections coordinator Mlibo Qoboshiyane could be reached for comment at the time of writing yesterday.
Sokujika, the party’s dispute committee chairman, yesterday said: “Any dispute emanating from the nomination process of candidates in a branch general meeting is an internal organisational matter guided by ANC guidelines.
“It is therefore against the ANC policies for an ANC member to communicate a dispute to the media as that can lead to an internal disciplinary process,” Sokujika said.
