Stardom could be just around the corner for hip-hop newcomer Emtee from Matatiele, who has been nominated in four categories for the Metro FM Music Awards next month.

Emtee, whose real name is Mthembeni Ndevu, saw his hit single Roll Up win the coveted song of the year title at the South African Hip-Hop Awards late last last year, and is now in the running for best video, best hip-hop album, newcomer of the year and best remix awards.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Emtee reflected on his latest achievements, saying “this is my time”.

“I really was not expecting to be nominated, let alone in four categories. But upon hearing the news I was just like ‘yeah man, I have arrived’,” he said.

He spoke about his debut album Avery and the inspiration behind it. “The album is named after my son, who is now eight months old.

“I named it after him because he came at a time when I was ready to give up on the music because things were not working out.

“The minute I found out he was on the way, I knew I would be a winner.

He is my inspiration,” he said. Music is not the only thing at which Emtee is making a name for himself. Many of his tweets have stirred controversy on social media.

“I always express myself freely and say what I think or feel, but at the end of the day people have to remember that I am just a kid,” said Emtee.

He said he believed in rappers and supported them.

“I don’t think I am in competition with anybody but I still listen to the other guys like AKA and Da LES, not for anything but to learn from them, and anytime I hear anything negative about me I go back to the drawing board just to prove them wrong,” Emtee said.
