VIDEO: Road rage brawl flies round media

A bloody road rage brawl erupted in East London out of an argument between two motorists over a lane change.

The fight was caught on camera by a passerby and has gone viral.

It happened in Southernwood on Thursday. The video shows fists flying in the middle of Gately Street between the driver of a white commercial truck, dressed in a grey T-shirt and dark grey trousers, and the driver of a red Mazda in black shorts and running shoes.

In a move that would have made boxing greats like Mohammed Ali and his nemesis Larry Holmes proud, the Mazda driver delivers a looping right cross to the chin of the truck driver.

His punch sends the truck driver tumbling to the ground.

The video then shows the man regaining his senses, but continuing to soak up punishment.

A bystander carrying a helmet attempts to break up the fight but without success.

Although the Daily Dispatch has only 15 seconds of footage, eyewitness and service station supervisor Masithembele Gxogxa said the fight lasted for 20 minutes.

It ended with both men covered in blood.

Gxogxa was helping a client with fuel for his tank when he saw the Mazda pull up at the parking bay of the shopping centre, and its driver confronting the truck driver, who had also parked nearby.

“They arrived here at the parking bay at the same time and argued about bad driving before they started assaulting each other,” Gxogxa said.

“I got closer to where the fight was happening and then pleaded with other bystanders to call security at the shopping centre before these guys kill each other, but no security came.”

Gxogxa said the fight ended with the truck driver, by now on top of the other motorist, assaulting him until he bled.

“No one intervened. The two drivers abruptly stopped the fight when the guy on top realised that the guy on the bottom was bleeding.

“Both men headed to their cars covered in blood and left. There were no police who arrived,” Gxogxa said.

East London police said yesterday they were not investigating the incident as no one had come forward to open a case.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mtati Tana, who had the opportunity to view the video before making a statement, said: “If a case has not been opened we cannot do anything about it.”

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Keith Ngesi described the fist fight as a rare occurrence.

“We don’t see much of it except rude hand gestures every now and then,” he added.

Ngesi said road rage was perpetuated by motorists who were impatient on the road.
