Malema streets ahead in political Twitter head-to-head

South African newsmakers are enjoying their share of popularity on social networks.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) commander-in-chief Julius Malema this week celebrated hitting the one million followers mark on Twitter.

Boasting on Twitter on Sunday night, Malema wrote: “Just clocked 1m twitter followers. Let’s continue constructive engagements, thanks very much.”

He later commented on his post: “What’s my name? The only South African politician with such capacity on Twitter, killing them softly.”

Malema did not respond to questions from the Saturday Dispatch this week but EFF member of parliament and commissar responsible for mobilisation, campaigns and special projects Godrich Gardee said yesterday Malema was the face of the EFF on social networks.

Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Minister Fikile “Razzmatazz” Mbalula has more than 439000 followers on Twitter.

Mbalula has been engaged in several “Twars” (Twitter wars) in the past with followers. Recently, he said his account was hacked after pictures of a half-naked woman appeared on his timeline.

United Democratic Movement president Bantu Holomisa, who connects with thousands of followers, said social media platforms made it easy to communicate his statements quickly.

He said he had more than 125000 followers on Twitter and over 100000 on Facebook.

Democratic Alliance spokesman Mabine Seabe said the party placed great emphasis on ground activity – community meetings, door-to-door and rallies – but outside of those, Twitter was its most direct way of interacting with citizens.

Seabe said the #AskMmusi ‘town hall’ gave South Africans an opportunity to interact with DA leader Mmusi Maimane on a variety of topics from policy to music taste. He said Maimane had 268044 followers on Twitter – a number growing daily.

Congress of the People spokesman Dennis Bloem said although the party’s president Mosiuoa Lekota was on Twitter, he preferred focusing on personal contact with people. Lekota has more than 7000 followers on Twitter.

Inkatha Freedom Party president Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi said he was not on Twitter — msindisif@dispatch.co.za
