Miss Eastern Cape to put sparkle into studies

Miss Eastern Cape Zimi Mabunzi and her princesses were introduced to the public over the weekend.

Winners of both the Miss Eastern Cape and the Miss Teen pageants received their prizes at a ceremony.

Mabunzi now has a brand new Volkswagen Up, a bursary worth R50000 and hampers.

The pageants were held in December but pageant founder Zikhona Ngxata said there had been things to finalise before giving out the prizes.

“The winners also received empowerment week certificates – they had to do some community work and write an assignment about that. Having the prize-giving and certificate ceremony now made more sense because the girls have sorted out their school arrangements,” she said.

The King William’s Town beauty is going to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) to pursue a degree in BCom Law. Mabunzi, who had to drop out of the University of Cape Town for financial reasons in 2014, said she could not wait to go back to studying.

“There’s so much I want to do once I graduate. I definitely want to start working in my field but I eventually want to go the entrepreneurial route and be an independent businesswoman.”

Ngxata said the competition was about changing lives and giving the girls a future.

“This is not just about the looks but rather we want to empower the girls and see them becoming successful in life.”

Ngxata said the first and second princesses – Zingcwele Songelwa and Aphiwe Mqunyana – also received hampers and bursaries.

“Zingcwele did not take the bursary because she already has a degree in agriculture. Aphiwe will be pursuing her studies in medicine at the Walter Sisulu University.”

Ngxata said they would make sure the girls finished their studies without any financial hiccups.

“If they do well then we will, by all means, try to support them and get all the financial help they need to finish their degrees.”

Miss Teen winners Abulele Dlungele, Sesona Gobe and Thimna Qakwane received hampers and tablets.

In its second year, Ngxata said she was pleased with the results of the pageant. “We want people who will uplift their communities and have a positive impact.”
