Thuli Madonsela encourages Oprah girls to embrace their dreams

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on Wednesday addressed pupils at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) at Henley on Klip in the Vaal‚ as the institution honoured its top achievers.

“You are the leaders our young democracy‚ the continent and the world need to turn the corner‚” Madonsela told the Grade 8-12 girls at their annual awards assembly‚ as quoted by her office’s social media platform.

The custodian of good governance in South Africa ends her term in office in October this year after high-profile and bruising battles with politicians over their handling of taxpayer cash.

“At my age I have learned that exposure itself expands a person’s dream‚” she told the OWLAG Assembly

In November 2015‚ talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey herself attended her South African school’s valedictory ceremony ‚ marking the fifth graduating class from the Academy.

During her keynote address‚ she told the graduates: “There is nothing in life you cannot get through – not a circumstance or situation. You have the strength and resilience to endure and overcome. When failure shows up in your life‚ show yourself to be the captain of your fate and soul.”

In August‚ academy head Melvin King hosted an event at the school with 64 OWLAG alumni to link graduates with potential employers. Representatives from over 50 corporates spanning a wide range of industries‚ attended the event.

King told guests: “The Academy and the Foundation’s mission is to ensure that each student’s educational journey goes beyond tertiary education and into meaningful employment.”

Oprah’s foundation “provides tertiary support in the form of funding to supplement the girls’ scholarships and student loans. However‚ we realised that our students and alumni do not have access to professional networks. As a result‚ we have committed to helping our students engage the networks that are necessary in helping them find jobs‚” said Rebecca Sykes‚ the foundation’s president.
