Vukuhambe pupils to return to school

Pupils kicked out of Vukuhambe Special School in Mdantsane for being “too old” will be reinstated with immediate effect.

Provincial education’s chief director of strategic coordination, Ray Tywa-kadi, said 10 pupils were affected by the decision earlier this month.

Tywakadi said district management was in talks with the school to ensure that children were back in the classroom and learning.

They will be moved to an institution that caters to their disability.

“Some learners are physically challenged while others are cognitively impaired. Other children have both disabilities, which is why it is important for us to assess learners and establish which curriculum can cater for the individual’s needs,” he said.

The acting chief director of the department’s social support services, Tembani Mtyida, said College Street Primary was in the process of being converted into a special school.

Five others in rural parts of the province are in the process of being established.
