Comics thrilled to take EL stage

East London comedy lovers are promised a weekend of laughs as three top comedians make their way to the city.

Tomorrow David Kau and Skhumba Hlophe perform at The Venue@Hemingways while on Saturday King Williams’ Town-born comedian Ndumiso Lindi celebrates his birthday with a comedy show at OHBrigado Champagne Bar.

This will be the first time that Kau brings his one-man show to the city.

The comedian, who has been doing stand-up for the past 18 years, arrives today and said he could not wait to meet some of his supporters who had followed his comedy since the 1990s.

The fun won’t end on Friday night though as on Saturday Lindi celebrates his birthday with comedy fans. He turned 35 on February 5.

“I’ve never done a party in East London before and 35 is a special number so why not have a comedy party to celebrate that?,” he mused.

The former Wang Verstana presenter will be joined by comedians Mbulelo “Manylaughs” Msongelwa and Eureka Ntsele.

Lindi said he would be focussing on hosting shows across the country this year.

“I am still doing Diluted People tour around the country,” he said.

Last year Lindi performed in London for the first time and is planning an international tour later in the year.

“I need to go back. I was well received while I was there. Comedy is such a universal language! All one has to do is make sure that people can relate.

“I spoke about my experience in their country and also touched on who I come from. Hopefully I will be going back soon,” he said.

OHBrigado owner Olwethu Hoyana said Lindi’s show formed part of their monthly comedy underground series.

“We started our monthly comedy nights last month and we are hoping to help develop the craft in East London,” he said.

Hoyana urged people to get to the venue at 8pm.

“Club comedy can be a bit tricky. People need to focus in order to get the jokes and if we have the show later then there will be chaos.

“We will have the show for about an hour and then we have the after party,” he said.

The first 100 people will get tickets for R200 which include drink vouchers and the rest will get tickets for R150.

Tickets for Kau’s show tomorrow cost R150 and are available at Computicket.
