Thousands of Buffalo City Metro employees yesterday marched to the East London City Hall demanding that all 5600 municipal workers be promoted by two levels.

SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) regional secretary Zo-lani Ndlela said since Buffalo City was declared a metropolis in 2011 a job evaluation process should have been done to equate BCM employees to other metros, but this had not happened.

“It’s been five years since the municipality has been declared a metro and the two levels that are demanded are reasonable and achievable,” said Ndlela.

Executive mayor Alfred Mtsi received the memorandum and promised to respond within seven days.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch Mtsi said the next step would be engag relevant directorates as most of the issues raised were matters of bargaining.

He said seven days to respond may be tight as some issues touched on existing policies.

Samwu also demanded the municipality absorbs expanded public works programme workers who have been with the municipality more than three years.

The mayor said the EPWP was meant to be a short-term programme to alleviate poverty and changing it to permanency may need a broader engagement that may even involve the treasury. — simthandilef@dispatch.co.za
