Popular DJ is leaving Umhlobo Wenene FM

Popular radio host Luyanda Gidane, affectionately known as “Luks”, is leaving Umhlobo Wenene FM (UWfm) for trufm.

Trufm station manager Thobeka Buswana said Gidane’s two decades in radio made him a suitable addition to the station as trufm prepares for its expansion plan.

He will start his new position on Tuesday.

“Luks has a wealth of broadcasting experience and is well-known and loved throughout the Eastern Cape,” Buswana said. “He is a perfect fit for the station as trufm prepares to expand its broadcast footprint to the rest of the province.

“A synergy between Luks, as a brand, and trufm will do well to entice new listeners that the station has not yet tapped into.”

She said Gidane enjoyed national recognition which, in partnership with the station’s offering, would assist in introducing trufm to new listeners.

Gidane joins Phethu Soga in the Afternoon show, aired Mondays to Fridays from 3pm to 6pm, and the trufm top 30 on Saturdays (9am-noon).

Gidane said he felt there was a lot he could add to the growth plan envisioned by the station.

“I relate to their brand. I might not really be a young person but I am young at heart, which makes me really keen to be part of a station that is fast-paced, modern and youth- based, but mostly I just also relish the idea of a fresh challenge,” he said.

Gidane started his radio career in 1995 at Ubuntu Community Radio Station where he worked as a music compiler and a weekend presenter.

He also had a stint at Bush Radio in Cape Town, where he did the afternoon drive, and worked at Ad Boys as a scriptwriter and voice over artist.

His radio break came in 2003 when he was invited for an interview to join UWfm where he worked until this month.

After 12 years with UWfm Gidane said he would always cherish the memories but he was looking forward to building something better with trufm.
