The much anticipated Metro FM music awards saw Eastern Cape hip-hop star Emtee walking away as the biggest winner of the glamorous occasion on Saturday night in Durban.

As expected, the new kid on the block from Matatiele, who is now based in Johannesburg, was in the spotlight as he collected four awards and R400000 in prize money.

The cash prize was a new feature of the awards and saw all the winners walk away with R100000 for each award, with R130 000 invested for the song of the year category.

Under his rapper belt Emtee, born Mthembeni Ndevu, now boasts the best hip-hop album, best music video and best remix for his hit single Roll Up, which saw him work with award- winning artists AKA and Wizkid on the remix.

His debut album Avery was titled after his son. To his surprise Emtee, 23, also received a fourth award, the listener’s choice, an award voted for by radio listeners.

While accepting his awards, he said he was speechless.

He thanked his parents for their patience with him, saying he had put them through a lot while trying to make it in the music industry.

Emtee made headlines in the music industry last year, the year he also walked away with the song of the year title at the South African Hip Hop Awards.

He also stirred controversy with his tweets and is making waves on the radio with his new single titled Pearl Thusi, a song he wrote about the South African actress, model and entrepreneur.

Another big winner of the night was Eastern Cape born afro-pop singer Nathi Mankayi who bagged the highly contested song of the year category for his track Nomvula. He also won the best African pop album, beating the award-winning Zahara, Zonke, Maleh and Kabomo.

Newcomer female rapper Fifi Cooper took home three awards including the best female album award and best new artist.

Rapper AKA also took home an award for his hit Baddest and another for best collaboration.

The first-ever One Africa Award was scooped by Nigerian musician Burna Boy, while legendary kwaito star Arthur Mafokate was awarded the lifetime achievement award following his electrifying medley performance with Kelly Khumalo and RnB singer Cici.
