Man stabbed to death, couple attacked as criminals target elderly

An Elderly man was stabbed and killed in his Aliwal North home on Sunday and another elderly couple attacked in their Komga home on Monday night.

The attacks follow that of an elderly Beacon Bay resident Brian Clarke, who is fighting for his life in an East London hospital after being assaulted with a pick at the weekend.

The incidents followed the same pattern where suspects forced their way into the victims’ homes to assault and rob them.

Police have not made any arrests in any of the cases.

Aliwal North police spokeswoman Captain Ursula Roelofse said police were called at 7pm on Sunday to the house of 78-year-old Sam van der Oosthuizen.

The neighbour was concerned he had not seen the man in two days and went to investigate.

Van der Oosthuisen was found dead with a stab wound to his head. The elderly man lived alone.

“They stole his TV, laptop, cellphone, firearm and Isuzu bakkie,” Roelofse said.

On Monday night, a couple was severely assaulted by four men before being tied up and robbed on their farm in Komga on Monday evening.

The incident occurred at about 7am at the home of 78-year-old Cornelius Greyling and his 76-year-old wife Otta.

Greyling was in the neighbourhood attending a workshop, and returned home to find four men assaulting his wife.

He was also assaulted before being robbed of money and a cellphone.

The men took Greyling’s bakkie and fled the scene with it.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Nkosikho Mzuku said the bakkie was recovered yesterday morning in a Komga forest.

Nothing had been taken from it.

“A case of house robbery was opened,” Mzuku said.
