BCM spends R3m to ease congestion

Buffalo City Metro (BCM) has spent R3-million on traffic calming measures around East London to help decrease traffic congestion and curb high accident rates.

The metro made the announcement on its website.

The traffic calming measures included the installation of new traffic lights at busy intersections in the Buffalo Street and speed humps on the Qumza Highway in Mdantsane.

He said Buffalo Street was still congested due to traffic lawlessness.

“We still get incidents of near collision of vehicles from opposite sides because no one is looking at the robots,” said Damoyi.

Thabiso Tshangeni, a street vendor, said she hoped people would eventually adhere to the traffic lights.

“I think people just need to get familiar with the idea of looking up and adhere to the rules of road,” she said.

BCM had not responded to questions at the time of writing.

Spokesman Thandy Matebese said he had forwarded Dispatch questions “to the relevant department” but was waiting for a response.
