Chants of ‘Sebolai has fallen’ erupted in the court room on Friday when former radio personality Donald Sebolai was sentenced to 20 years for the murder of his girlfriend.
The JoziFM DJ had admitted during the court proceedings‚ before Judge Cassim Moosa in the South Gauteng High Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court‚ that he believes it’s okay to slap a woman for refusing to listen to him‚ but claimed he is not a violent man.
Sebolai‚ 38‚ was convicted in October of murdering his then 32-year-old girlfriend Rachel “Dolly” Tshabalala. She was stabbed in her pubic area when the couple had a fight at Sebolai’s Soweto flat in 2014 and bled to death.
The former Jozi FM DJ‚ known as DJ Donald Duck‚ was also convicted of attempting to defeat the ends of justice for tampering with the crime scene by mopping up Tshabalala’s blood on the floor.
He admitted that he could have saved her life‚ had he immediately secured medical attention for her.
The court heard previously from a pathologist that Tshabalala’s body showed no bruising or injuries‚ apart from the single stab wound.
His lawyer had asked the court to impose a lesser sentence than the required 15-year term because he believed Sebolai was a good candidate for rehabilitation and could support his three children better financially if he was imprisoned for a shorter period. The State disagreed‚ saying the chances of successful rehabilitation were slim.
