Residents living in a Gonubie townhouse complex say despite high bond costs, rentals and rates, they feel like they are living in a rural area because of their main gravel road.

The residents from Gonubie Palms located on Quinera Lagoon Drive say the road has decreased the value of their properties, cost them on car repairs and put their lives in danger.

They have called for it to be tarred, but the department of roads and public works said there were currently no plans to tar the road.

Olwethu Mafutha, who has been living at Gonubie Palms for the past four years, said she had lost count of the times she had had to replace a tyre, shocks or do wheel alignment on her car.

Mafutha said when she bought the three-bedroom house valued at close to R1-million she thought the road would be fixed “soon”.

“It’s been four years now and nothing has been done. We pay more than R1000 for rates and still have to pay for repairs of damages on my car caused by this road.”

Siyakholwa Macanda said residents had to wash and vacuum their vehicles almost daily due to the dust.

Another concerned resident – who did want to be named – claims she was involved in an accident when a vehicle behind her lost control and drove into her. “This road is not safe, especially when it rains.”

The residents said when they asked Buffalo City Metro (BCM) about the road they were told it fell under the provincial roads department.

Spokesman for the department, Mphumzi Zuzile, said there were no plans to tar the road in this year’s financial budget allocation.
