SACP and ANC march against parole of Chris Hani's killer

Hundreds of South African Communist Party and African National Congress supporters from Ekurhuleni delivered a memorandum of demands at the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg on Monday in a demonstration against the Pretoria High Court’s decision to release SACP leader Chris Hani’s killer Janusz Walus on parole.

Hani was shot dead by Walus on April 10 1993 at his Dawn Park‚ Boksburg‚ home.

The memorandum was received by Hlengani Rikhotso‚ court manager of the Constitutional Court.

The ANC believes his release is a travesty to justice and a tragedy for the Hani family.

Fikile Mbalula‚ the sports minister attending the protest in his capacity as an ANC national executive council member‚ said Walus doesn’t deserve to be freed‚ he must “rot in jail“.

“We are marching to the Constitutional Court to voice our disgust at the release of Janusz Walus but at the same time exhausting the platforms of the law to support the Department of Justice.

“We have come here to ask for the review of the decision that has been taken by the lower courts. Judgment has been handed down but that doesn’t mean the judgment can go unchallenged‚” said Mbalula.

On Thursday‚ the wife of the slain anti-apartheid hero said the court’s decision to release her husband’s killer on parole marked a sad day for South Africa. Limpho Hani said the presiding judge had no right to tell her to forgive Walus and move on.

“It’s very sad for South Africa. It’s a very sad day. I am not upset‚ but I am highly irritated that this white woman can tell me how to feel. She comes with a white superiority complex to tell me I should forgive I should move on. It is not her husband that was murdered.”
