EC choir claim clash saw them eliminated

Members of the Eastern Cape team on Clash of the Choirs, claim their choirmaster’s inability to work under pressure, cost them the top spot.

This comes after the choir, headed by singer Bucie, was eliminated from the singing competition this past weekend.

Pelisa Sonjica said the choir had challenges from day one.

“People expected us to be eliminated in the first week because that’s how the previous Eastern Cape choirs have done,” she said.

Sonjica said at times their choirmaster did not know what she was doing.

“At times she would even hint that we should just give up,” she said.

In her defence, Bucie said in addition to the pressure of coming up with interesting renditions, her team always got negative remarks from the judges.

“How do you keep your choir motivated when you don’t get any positive comments? You can’t,” she said.

In Sunday’s episode, one of the judges said she could see in the choir’s eyes that they had lost hope.

Sonjica said: “I think that statement was meant for Bucie. We worked hard from day one but Bucie would sometimes hint that we should go home.

“Some of her comments made us feel like she was wasting her time on us.”

Nomakhaya Yeye said Bucie kept on telling them she had always done things at her pace.

“She didn’t take pressure very well,” said Yeye.

Another member, Sinobom Vazi, said the choirmaster’s mood towards them was determined by their performance.

“She was on and off. We never knew what her mood was going to be like. She loved us but I think this was hard for her,” said Vazi.

The Easy to Love star said her music career had to be put on hold while she focused on leading the team.

“It was difficult to do my own things because I was on set from 7am to midnight sometimes.

“This was not easy,” she said.

The final three choirs in the finale on April 3 are led by choir masters Kelly Khumalo, and rappers iFani and JR. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
