Eastern Cape rock band The Finkelstiens is the inspiration behind East London-born muso Stuart Reece’s passion to make music.

The musician, now based in Johannesburg, will kick-start his Eastern Cape tour in Grahamstown today.

After seeing The Finkelstiens perform, Reece took it upon himself to learn to play the guitar at age 13.

He continued perfecting his guitar and vocal skills throughout high school, after which he went on to study marketing management but soon found himself quitting.

“I was 21 when I decided to make a living from my music. Music is what drives me,” Reece said.

After four years of making music and performing in pubs around Port Elizabeth, the 26-year-old decided to move to Johannesburg.

“At first, moving to a new city is hard, but there are definitely more opportunities there than in the Eastern Cape,” he said.

Still making music as an independent artist, Reece said for now he was happy with how things were going.

“I have a private investor helping me and a marketing team. If you are signed then your label does all the work for you and while that is great, they also take a big share of the profit. All the money we make, comes to us.”

Reece said his latest tour was about bringing new music to the people. “This tour is all about letting people know there is new music. We will be releasing a new EP in June.”

So far, Reece has released one album and an EP. On this tour he would be joined by Kristo Zondagh on drums and percussion.

lCatch the two tomorrow night at Legends Showcase Venue. Tickets for the show cost R80 at Lee Gold or at the door. - poliswap@dispatch.co.za
