COPE calls for churches to rescue country from corruption

The Congress of the People (COPE) party has called for churches and faith-based groups to step in and rescue South Africa from corruption that has got out of hand‚ charging that politics under President Jacob Zuma has become “shorn of moral values”.

‘COPE believes that all denominations of the church and all faith based groups in South Africa should act in concert and solidity to strengthen moral values and ethical behaviour in government and society.

Our politics under Mr Zuma is so shorn of moral values that it has tarnished the image of politics in our country and frightened off investors.

“Every church‚ mosque‚ temple and synagogue should now leap to the defence of moral values so that by putting pressure on politicians to be moral and ethical‚ South Africa can become good and prosperous again‚” said COPE spokesman Dennis Bloem.

Alluding to the growing controversy over the alleged influence of the Gupta family on Zuma‚ Bloem said the purported capture of the state by powerful business interests had become a matter of great significance to South Africa and the world at large.

Referring to Zuma as “an albatross around the neck of the South Africa economy”‚ Bloem stated that the longer he remained in office‚ the weaker the economy would become.

“His presence in office is a dampener on investment confidence in South Africa. Everyone knows that Minister Pravin Gordhan’s steady hand is essential to steering the economy out of trouble. Everyone‚ however‚ knows equally well that Mr Zuma has a different agenda and will seek to undermine the Minister of Finance because of his capture by corporates in South Africa. He wants a pliant Minister of Finance‚ not someone who is determined to rescue our faltering economy‚” Bloem asserted.

“While (Gwede) Mantashe (the ANC secretary general) and others keep shielding Zuma‚ he will remain unrepentant and as adventurous with taxpayers’ money as he has been since 2009. The cream on the cake for Zuma is to have both National treasury and SARS becoming puppets in his hands. Gordhan is a stumbling block in his plans‚” Bloem charged.
