South Africa needs a skills revolution which will fundamentally change the society and stimulate much-needed economic growth.

This was said by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa when he opened the Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) summit in Midrand yesterday.

“We need a skills revolution in our country that will fundamentally change our society in many ways … no country can achieve economic growth without paying attention to the skills development of its people‚” Ramaphosa said.

He told delegates from the education and industry sectors that the current global economic conditions required South Africa to reposition its economy and reduce its reliance on commodity exports.

This‚ he added‚ could be achieved by investing more money and resources on skills, in particular artisans skills.

“With a skilled citizenry‚ we can build more‚ process more and do much more.

“We can develop and manufacture more products, become more efficient‚ more resourceful.

“Skills grow the economy and they create jobs. They tend to raise the standard of living and reduce inequality.

“Education and skills development are the most effective means we have at our disposal to end poverty and reduce inequality.”

Ramaphosa is the chair of the HRDC‚ formed in 2010‚ which is meeting for the second time to find solutions on addressing skills development in the country.

The council has advocated successfully for the adoption of colleges by private companies in order to build a bridge for absorption of graduates in different industries.
