Umhlobo Wenene FM continues to swell its listenership. A recent radio audience measurement survey shows that the station gained another 138000 listeners between July and December 2015.

The station currently has more than four million listeners.

While some stations would be making some changes from tomorrow, Umhlobo Wenene FM station manager Phumzile Mnci said they had no major changes on the cards.

“We are not under pressure to make any changes because what we have going is working.

“Our goal is to have more than fivemillion listeners and we are close to that already,” he said.

Mnci said the recent figures showed their shows were growing.

“Last year our breakfast show was leading but this year things are different.

“Our Sunday morning religious show has taken the number one spot but we don’t know for how long,” he said. Both shows have more than 1.7-million listeners.

Their breakfast show, Breakfast Eyondlayo Ekuseni (BEE), is one of the most listened-to shows.

“Our breakfast show follows the same format as other shows but it is the way our guys deliver that makes them unique and loved by many,” he said.

Although there are no major changes, presenter Blac Maci leaves the station. Maci is expected to join Bhisho-based station Tru FM from tomorrow as a co-host on the Mid-Morning Blend show.

She is the second Umhlobo Wenene FM personality to join Tru FM this year. DJ Luks Gidane made his debut on Tru FM on March 1.

Other stations that did well in the period surveyed are community stations Kumkani FM, Alfred Nzo Community Radio and Mdantsane FM.

In the period between April and September last year, Algoa FM gained 49000 listeners, pushing their total to 526000.

The more recent figures show that they have dropped 48000 to 491000. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
