Anguish for mom as search for teen stalls

A mother from a Nqamakwe village outside Butterworth is agonising over the disappearance of her 19-year-old son, Ntsika Kuse, believed to have been abducted by three men from the village six months ago.

Flora Mono, 51, was at work in King William’s Town when she received a call from neighbours saying her son had been abducted by three men after he was accused of stealing a cellphone at Nqamakwe village.

And after the matter was reported to police, they allegedly warned Mono against speaking out about the matter publicly, saying this would jeopardise their investigation.

However, six months later, Mono claims the investigating officer is no longer taking her calls.

“I want my son back, dead or alive.

“I just need closure, I have to find him,” Mono, who lives in Maphiko village, said yesterday.

Although Nqamakwe police arrested three men in connection with the kidnapping, they have not been able to find the missing teenager.

Two of those arrested – twin brothers – have since been released from custody and have turned state witness against the third suspect.

Investigations have been ongoing for five months and the accused is still in custody.

Kuse, who is studying in Port Elizabeth, disappeared while visiting the village in November.

On the afternoon of November 7, neighbours informed his mother that three men in a metallic gold Toyota Avanza had arrived at the house and accused Kuse of stealing a cellphone.

He was allegedly forced into the vehicle and whisked away and has not been seen since.

“I last spoke to him on November 4 when he called reminding me of his pocket money as he usually did every month.

“I searched for him and searched for him in hospitals and mortuaries in East London and Butterworth,” she said.

Mono also approached senior Eastern Cape police management at provincial headquarters in Zwelitsha, but to no avail.

Butterworth police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said: “They appeared in Nqamakwe Magistrate Court on November, 13 last year.

“The case is still under investigation. Two suspects , aged 25, were released while the third suspect, aged 30, is still in custody.

“Once investigations are complete the matter will be referred back to court. The victim is still missing and police are appealing to the community to assist them with any information about the kidnapping and whereabouts of the victim,” he added.

“Information may be communicated to the branch commander SAPS Nqamakwe detective warrant officer Sotashe on 083-571-3822.” — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
