President Zuma appoints new head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU)

President Jacob Zuma has appointed Advocate Jan Lekhoa Mothibi to head the Special Investigating Unit (SIU)‚ the presidency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The appointment takes effect from May 1‚ 2016.

Adv Mothibi‚ known as Andy Mothibi‚ is currently the Executive Director for Legal‚ Governance‚ Risk and Compliance at Medscheme Holdings.

He has held executive and senior management positions in both the public and private sectors including Standard Bank‚ Nedbank‚ and the South African Receiver of Revenue (SARS).

He holds‚ amongst others‚ an LLB and B Proc degrees as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Law.

Adv Mothibi has also worked previously as both a Prosecutor and Magistrate.

“We congratulate Advocate Mothibi for his appointment and wish him all the best in his new responsibilities of the investigation of corruption and maladministration‚” said President Zuma.

In March 2015‚ President Zuma had appointed Advocate Gerhard Wilhelm Visagie as the Acting Head of the SIU pending the appointment of a permanent Head of the SIU.

“The President thanks Adv Visagie for his contribution.”

The appointment of Advocate Visagie followed the resignation of Advocate Vas Soni for personal reasons in February last year.
