Okmalumkoolkat performance cancelled after social media pressure

Organisers of a music event involving rapper Smiso Zwane‚ popularly known as Okmalumkoolkat‚ announced on Friday that they had decided to remove him from the event’s line-up. This after social media calls from fans and brands to boycott the troubled rapper.

The musician was supposed to perform as one of the headline acts at the popular Waves music event in Cape Town on Friday evening‚ but his appearance was cancelled by the event’s promoters at the 11th hour.

In a statement issued on the organiser’s Twitter page on Friday afternoon‚ the promoters wrote: “CPT Fam ... kindly note that OkMalumKoolKat will no longer be performing at #WAVESVX tonight. Thanks in advance for understanding.”

The cancelled appearance comes after Okmalumkoolkat found himself the subject of a day-long heated debate on social media‚ with many calling for fans to boycott the Waves event over the rapper’s previous conviction on sexual assault charges.

The rapper’s personal life continues to court controversy as he returns to music after spending a month in a Tasmanian jail for an alleged sexual assault in January.

When he returned to South Africa‚ he apologised to fans for the ordeal and promised to “explain the events as they happened from my perspective” in due time.
