LEGEND’S STILL GOT THE GROOVE

A love for music recently saw 80-year-old Tally Goduka record his first album at Legends Showcase in Berea, East London.

The Mdantsane muso started playing in the late 1950s and has never had the opportunity to record an album before.

“I started music in 1958 with a penny whistle at West Bank location but later changed to an alto saxophone,” he said.

In the early 1960s, Goduka attended Telleric Music School and was tutored by Eric Nomvete.

His musical journey saw him work with a number of musicians from across the country.

Now, after more than four decades in the music industry, Goduka will finally have recordings of some of his songs.

Goduka is one of the beneficiaries of the Legends Launchpad programme, a partnership between the Legends studio in Berea and the Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council (Ecpacc).

The programme aims to preserve the musical heritage of the province by giving musicians like Goduka an opportunity to record their music.

The saxophone player is also one of the founders of the GBM Music Academy in Mdantsane.

“Our school has three members who tutor music theory and practical in various types of musical instruments.”

Legends Showcase engineer and studio manager Gary Ndlovu said it had been a dream of his to have his own studio and facility to create programmes that engage and assist the community.

“The atmosphere in studio is electric and I’m humbled to work with such amazing fathers, musicians and professionals. There is lots of wisdom and every session is a learning opportunity,” he said.

Ndlovu said this was the first step towards creating a platform for legends like Goduka.

“We want the music passed on to the next generation, as well as to create possible market opportunities and income streams for the wonderful musicians who have been playing for over 40 years.”

Ndlovu said Goduka’s project had already created more than nine jobs.

Goduka’s upcoming album is produced by internationally acclaimed trumpeter Sakhile Simane. The 28-year-old was one of Goduka’s music students.

Ndlovu said in the coming weeks they would be doing a photo shoot for Goduka and also making CD covers.

“The last leg of his project is the album launch that will be done at the Legends Showcase venue,” he said.
