EFF hits back at De Lille

The Economic Freedom Fighters have hit back at Cape Town mayor‚ Patricia de Lille‚ after she alleged that the political party was behind the service-delivery protests that have rocked Dunoon since Sunday night.

“Every day we see people living in appalling conditions‚ and that in time they become so accustomed to their circumstances‚ that eventually they accept it.

One of the big problems in Du Noon is overpopulation and population density.

“Add to that a shortage of service and various social ills and it is a recipe for the uprisings in places such as Du Noon and elsewhere in the province‚’’ a statement by the party read.

” Due to the inability to deliver services mayor Patricia de Lille and the City of Cape Town does not need opposition political parties to incite people because she and her city council are doing a good enough job on their own. Everyone has as right to dignity in their neighbourhoods. And how can we forget how the honourable mayor and her officials ware masks to cover their mouths and their noses while walking through such neighbourhoods.’’

Protests over housing broke out anew in the informal settlement east of Table View in Cape Town at about 8.45pm on Sunday. Protesters stoned and damaged MyCiti bus stations and looted foreign-owned shops.

De Lille‚ who said she had met the ANC ward councillor Lubabalo Makeleni last night‚ attributed the Dunoon protests to “EFF thugs and gangsters”.

“We call on the Economic Freedom Fighters not to start their campaign with violence and destruction‚” she said. “They cannot try to gain votes at the expense of the poor through the destruction of public and private property.”

The EFF had supported the last round of service-delivery protests in Dunoon about 11 days ago.
