Joyous Celebration marks 20 years with outdoor EC concert

Award-winning South African gospel band Joyous Celebration continues to grow after years of inspiring the nation with powerful music.

The group is celebrating 20 years in the music industry.

One of the co-founders, Jabu Hlongwane, said their latest album, Joyous 20, was a celebration of their many years in the business and how they had gained support.

“Joyous 20 speaks of how God has been good to us and how He continues to bless us,” he said.

To celebrate with the people, the group would be performing at the Boardwalk Festive Lawn Area in Port Elizabeth on April 30.

Hlongwane said back in 1996 when they released Joyous 1, they did not think a follow-up album would be possible.

“We’ve had hard times and we really did not think we would have Joyous 2. It is all God. This is not about us.”

Hlongwane described Joyous Celebration as a training academy for musicians.

“We get young people who are gifted in music. We groom them, empower them and when they are ready to leave, we release them.

“In most cases the guys don’t want to leave. You see tears when you tell them it’s time to go,” he said.

Joyous Celebration has produced the likes of Ntokozo Mbambo, Nqubeko Mbatha, Brenda Mtambo, Mahalia Buchanan, Khaya Mthethwa, Brian Temba, Andile B and Swazi Dlamini, to mention just a few.

Hlongwane said they would never stand in anyone’s way when they felt they were ready to expand.

Tickets for the event happening on April 30 are available at Computicket from R220.
