DA marches in Duncan Village to highlight squalid conditions

A group of about 100 Democratic Alliance supporters marched in Duncan Village yesterday to highlight the township’s appalling living conditions.

Party members led by caucus leader in the Buffalo City Metro council Jan Smit, said it was time for the DA to take power in the ward.

The march also sought to highlight the township’s struggle against poverty, lack of housing and crime.

Smit said the party had elected a new councillor candidate for ward 8 hoping to bring change to voters’ lives.

“We are here to say to residents that we are here as a party and we are a force to be reckoned with. The reception was amazing, there was no animosity, everyone is just happy. It was a peaceful march.”

He added that the DA was promising voters freedom, fairness and opportunities.

“When we come in government we will ensure that there is better service delivery for all the people here. First will be the clean up of the town. This place is extremely dirty,” he said. “We will repair all the leaks and the sewage leakages.”

Current ward 19 councillor Dick Green, who will contest ward 8 in the local government elections, said according to the new ward demarcations the DA already had a large following in the area.

He said the party had achieved a number of successes in ward 19 and hoped to bring change to ward 8.

He said residents were wiser now and were no longer fooled by food parcels but wanted real change.
