EL Street Store receives mountains of support

Frere Hospital CEO Rolene Wagner and about 60 volunteers spent Saturday morning sorting through a “mountain” of donated clothing ahead of East London’s first Street Store on Wednesday.

The Street Store is a charity initiative started in Cape Town two years ago by international advertising agency M&C Saatchi Abel and founded by Maximilian Pazak and Kayli Vee Levitan in partnership with The Haven Night Shelter on Napier.

It aims to create a “shop-like” environment where homeless people can pick out clothes with the assistance of volunteers in a dignified manner.

Wagner said she had been inspired to bring the concept to East London after she and other community members read about it on social media.

The East London store is being hosted by Dr Carola Hantelmann-Nawa, who arranged collection points around the city.

“We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic response,” said Wagner, who was hard at work sorting and folding clothing on Saturday morning.

“There were bags upon bags of clothing. We sorted them into women’s, men’s and children’s ‘departments’, as well as sizes and winter and summer wear. We want to create a store effect.”

She said people still had today and tomorrow to donate to the Street Store by bringing unwanted shoes and clothes to the Salvation Army at 52 St Peters Road, Southernwood.

Wagner said volunteers from Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre and Frere Hospital will be on hand on Wednesday to provide social support and screen homeless people who may need to access health services.

The Street Store will take place in the front yard of the Salvation Army between 9am and 2pm on Wednesday.
