Affirming ‘Voice’ lets stars shine

Year after year thousands of aspiring singers’ dreams of becoming professional musicians are shattered on Idols SA – but this year the well-known American show, The Voice, was launched in South Africa.

Miti said she entered the competition because of its unique nature and because the coaches did not break anyone’s dream.

East London music teachers shared her sentiments.

Legends Showcase Music School principal Gary Ndlovu said apart from selling the big dream which is fame, glory and success, both shows allowed hopefuls to dream and try their luck at breaking into the music industry.

“If I were to choose which is better, I’d say The Voice. Singers are not judged on their looks, disability or background but solely on the quality of the voice. Idols SA looks for a pop star that suits a particular category,” he said.

The Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre director, Sy Ntuli, said affirmation and nurturing were crucial in the music industry, especially for new artists.

“Affirmation helps artists to believe in themselves. It builds their self-esteem and confidence.

“Nurturing artists is also significant as it helps to develop their skills and knowledge, thus preparing and making them better artists,” he said.

For the past couple of weeks, the singers have been working closely with their coaches.

Miti said she had learned a lot from the award-winning singers and was glad she chose Lira her as her coach.

Ntuli said any music competition should have a development programme that was aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of artists.

While The Voice SA gives aspiring singers hope, only time will tell whether the days of Idols SA are numbered.

The winner of The Voice SA will be announced on May 22.
