Jazz, gospel fest delayed again

The  long awaited Emonti Jazz Gospel Festival due to take place this weekend has been postponed yet again.

This time organisers, Litha Yaya and Tulas Mbuyazwe attributed the sudden postponement to bad weather and the two-week municipal strike, despite having assured the Daily Dispatch last week that the show would take place during the weekend.

The show was initially scheduled for the end of March but was postponed two days before the event. In an interview with the Daily Dispatch last week Yaya said the delay was due to financial problems.

“We were waiting for some of the sponsors to respond but they did not come through on time.

“We had no other option but to postpone our event.

“We did not want to call it off completely because we knew that people were looking forward to it,” he said.

Although he refused to get into detail about the sponsors, their poster lists Buffalo City Metro, SABC, I’solezwe, GH Mumm, Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism, and Sokhanasonke as some of the partners for the festival.

This time the postponement was made hours before the concert through messages broadcast via Whatsapp which circulated to East Londoners.

“The Emonti Urban Jazz & Gospel Music by the Sea Festival 2016 has once again been postponed, this time due to the weather service report of a thunder storm approaching the Eastern Cape as well as the municipal strike which has disrupted the city,” it read.

The pair said: “This is highly disappointing for us as event organisers and we hope this doesn't make you lose your faith in us”.

They urged those who had already purchased tickets to get a refund from Computicket.

Umhlobo Wenene FM which was among the sponsors of the concert issued a statement on social media informing the public that the concert would not be taking place. They further mentioned that they had made several attempts to get hold of the organisers, but were unsuccessful.

The long-anticipated concert boasted gospel artists like Rebecca Malope, Malibongwe, Dumi Mkokstad and Hlengiwe who were to perform from noon to 6pm and jazz and afro pop musicians were to continue from 6pm. The show promised to feature legendary Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Zahara, The Soil, Mafikizolo, Micasa and many more.
