Guild will host Eagles tribute

Soaring harmonies, intricate acoustic guitar delights and a songbook packed with popular hits will be the order of the day when Centrestage pay tribute to The Eagles next weekend.

The show at the Guild Theatre will see the Centrestage team honouring the US rock band known for hits such as Hotel California, Take It Easy, Witchy Woman and Tequila Sunrise, among many others.

Centrestage Productions’ Gary Hemmings said the show would be modelled on two of The Eagles’ famous reunion concerts, one from 1994 and their 2005 farewell tour.

The last time the Centrestage band was in East London was in January, when they teamed up with Ian von Memerty for an Elton John tribute show.

The Eagles tribute will start in East London, and move to Port Elizabeth a week later.

Hemmings said Andre Strydom would take on the role of The Eagles’ Timothy Schmit, Wayne Kallis the role of Don Henley, Alan Kozak will front as Joe Walsh, and Sandy Robbie plays Glen Frey, who died tragically in January this year.

Kozak said The Eagles were far more sophisticated than the country rockers they appeared to be. “Complex, lush harmonies, unforgettable medleys and snarling guitar riffs with big teeth – 150 million records later they are still one of the best ensembles on the planet.”

Music director Sandy Robbie said preparing for the show had not been easy. “Our biggest challenge has been to try to get as close as possible to their incredibly tight harmony sound and very distinctive voices. They produced one of the most classic rock songs of all time in Hotel California,” said Robbie.

The show will run on Friday and Saturday next week.

Tickets cost R160 and are available from Computicket or at the Guild Theatre. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
