Eleven in court over Vuwani violence

Eleven of the 21 people arrested in connection with public violence over municipal demarcation issues in the Vuwani area of Limpopo appeared in court on Monday.

They were remanded in custody until Monday next week where they will apply for bail.

The group‚ aged between 19 and 37‚ was arrested for incidents of public violence. 20 schools were burnt and four damaged during protests by community members after the Polokwane High Court’s rejected their application for a review of the decision to incorporate Vuwani and some of the villages in the area into a new municipality that also includes Malamulele.

Those arrested face charges of public violence‚ malicious damage to property and arson.

The protests started on Sunday last week‚ resulting in the arrests.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga revealed last week that at least half a billion rands would b needed to fix the damaged schools and bring the situation back to normal at those that had been burnt.

Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha was scheduled to meet President Jacob Zuma on Monday to discuss the violence that has engulfed the Vuwani area.

According to police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Ledwaba‚ the other six people arrested were scheduled to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court later on Monday.

He said it was because they had committed offences within the jurisdiction of the Thohoyandou magisterial district.

Four of those arrested were handed to a probation officer for assessment as they were minors‚ said Ledwaba.
