Self-proclaimed Xhosa language activist Tsepiso Nzayo is bringing comedy back to Grahamstown when he returns to the city for one night only.

The Tsepiso and Friends Comedy Night show is the comedian’s way of introducing his friends and also to bring some excitement ahead of the National Arts Festival (NAF).

“I used to do shows such as Hleka Thursdays and Sundays but I started doing more shows outside of Grahamstown and people have been asking me to host a show. I think now is the right time to do that,” he said.

Nzayo is currently based in Mqanduli where he works for an NGO.

The comedian, who was nominated for a Comic Choice award three years ago, started comedy in 2012 and had his first show called Nam Ndiyakwazi in Grahamstown.

He went on to host a number of shows around his home town and around the province as well.

Nzayo has performed on the 99% Xhosa Comedy Show and was recently featured on David Kau’s Mo Jokes tour.

“The show is one way of bringing out the funny side of life and also have fun with people back at home,” he said.

Nzayo has a Rhodes University honours degree in African languages and his comedy sets consist mainly of Xhosa and a little bit of English as well.

Nzayo has trademarked himself with his narrative style of storytelling by using situations ranging from getting calls from ex-girlfriend to challenges of diet and eating healthy.

He said people should expect to laugh at everyday stories told with a Xhosa twist.

The event will feature the likes of Sihle’sam Maholwana, King Beema from trufm, Mbulelo “ManyLaughs” Msongelwa, Luphelo Kodwa, Mvomvo Mpahleni and Sonwabile Sigcau.

The host of the show will be Buck Matyila from trufm.

lThe show takes place on May 28 at the Grahamstown City Hall from 6pm. Tickets for the event cost R50 at the door or from Radio Grahamstown. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
